Most common area of tile bond failure is the spa dam wall. The spa dam wall tile takes a beating from the sun, and hot cold fluctuations stress the bond daily.
Just so you know, it is always a good idea to keep all the tile pieces that fall off. For the most part, the tile cannot be found for sale again, and if it can, it will likely have color differences.

On average, one can expect swimming pool expansion joint sealant to last 3 to 5 years, entirely dependent on movement of concrete. Concrete moves and shifts because the ground it is on is dynamic.
While there is nothing to panic about when the mastic begins to fail, it is a good idea to maintain the seal to prevent water from saturating the substrate as well as the cold joint bonds of the masonry and also working its way to the back of the tile breaking down the bond and contributing to failure, and thus leading to repairs sooner.
Saw cut out old plastic deck strips and install new self leveling mastic sealant. We replace lots of plastic deck strips with mastic. It looks so much better. Many people think the strips are drains. This is incorrect. They are simply decorative and guides.
